The Life of Kim Satgat

Kim Satgat was born the second son of Kim An-geun and Lady Yi of Hampyeong, on March 13, 1807 (the 7th year of King Sunjo's reign) in Hocam-ri. Hoecheon-myeon, Yangju-gun, Gyeonggi-do. He was a descendant of Seon-pseong the founder of the Andong Kim Clan, who had been designated as a meritorious subject for his role in the foundation of the Goryeo Dynasty. Kim Satgat's real name was Byeong-yeon and his pen name was Nango.

When the Hong-Gyeong-rae Rebellion broke out in 1811 (the 11th year of King Sunjo's reign), his grandfather Kim Ik-sun, the magistrate of Suncheon, surrendered to the rebels. The government took a punitive measure against his shameful act, and the whole family was forced to move to Yeongwol and live there in seclusion.

Byeong-yeon was taught to read and write by his mother, never realizing what his grandfather had

done or comprehending the punishment imposed on his family. Later, when he was 20, he won the first prize in a literary composition contest hosted by the Yeongwol Government, for which he wrote an essay criticizing the shameful surrender of the former magistrate. However, he eventually found out that the former magistrate whom he had criticized so severely was

his own grandfather and left home at the age of 22, burdened with feelings of remorse and grief. While he led the life of a wanderer, he composed many verses and laid the groundwork for popular literature of the Joseon period.

Upon his death he was buried in Dongbok of Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do in 1863. Three years later. his second son, Ik-gyun, moved the tomb to its present location.
